Look around at any streetwear drop these days and you're almost guaranteed to spot an iconic, graffiti-style logo: Stüssy. But what we now know as one of the biggest names in fashion and street culture started out as a signature scrawled on surfboards in California. The history of Stüssy isn't just the story of a brand – it's about how a local surf shop grew into a global style movement. Authenticity, creativity and a real commitment to community made Stüssy one of the essential names in streetwear – and still do to this day.
From surf shop to the front of the streetwear movement
Today the Stüssy name is synonymous with streetwear – an iconic logo, laid-back style and a forever-young attitude. But few people know that the brand didn't start out in New York or Tokyo, but in a small Californian surf shop.

The early days – boards, sea and style
Stüssy was founded around 1980 by Shawn Stussy, a Californian surfboard shaper. The business started out making and selling surfboards, and Shawn hand-signed every single board with his own distinctive graffiti-style signature – which later became the Stüssy logo.
As customers started to recognise the signature, Stussy began printing the logo on T-shirts, caps and sweatshirts too – and with that, one of the world's first streetwear brands was born.
The turning point – fashion born from subculture
In 1984, Shawn Stussy met Frank Sinatra Jr. (not the famous singer's son), and together they founded Stüssy Inc. From there, the brand deliberately set out to widen its audience – surfers, skaters, graffiti writers, hip-hop fans and kids from the club scene all started wearing Stüssy.

By the end of the '80s, the brand had quickly reached cult status – especially in Japan, London and New York.
Stüssy: the cornerstone of modern streetwear
By the '90s, Stüssy was no longer just a surf brand – it was one of the first global streetwear brands. The brand:
- spotted the power of limited editions early on,
- collaborated with artists, DJs and skaters,
- and stayed true to its underground style while growing into a global name.
Stüssy didn't follow trends – it set them.
Stüssy style today
Today's Stüssy clothing covers everything from classic graphic tees and technical jackets to bucket hats. The brand serves up nostalgia for anyone craving the '90s, plus fresh, modern pieces for the new streetwear generation.

Stüssy collabs (Nike, Converse, Our Legacy, Dior) keep pulling in new audiences – but the brand's spirit hasn't changed.
Stüssy: more than a brand – a way of life
The history of Stüssy is the perfect example of how an authentic subculture can grow from a small surf shop into a world-class fashion brand – without ever losing its roots.
